Process makes perfect
All startups should take performance management seriously, so it’s good to see how these were handled in a team at Airbnb. Plenty of good advice there.
My own 2p: insist on a strong component of self-appraisal, have such reviews every 3 or 6 months, share notes ahead of the meeting (to focus the discussion) and, as much as possible, separate money matters from the review itself (not to cloud the discussion, focusing instead on personal development).
It’s all about People
I typically recommend having a limited tolerance for people who behave like an ‘energy sink’, but here is some good advice on how to deal with someone who doesn’t want to be happy.
