The 5-Minute Startup CTO #67
Employee engagement in 2020, Object-oriented UX, Expectations on managers, Decoupling
Hi,
I hope you’re well!
Here are this week’s 4 tips on People, Product, Process and Tech:
👭 People
With many countries facing a second wave of the Covid pandemic and last-resort lockdowns, 2020 is turning out to be quite a year.
Ben Travis identified 4 areas in which employee engagement has changed, and where leaders can act: human connections, anxiety, recognition and adaptability.
🥫 Product
A fairly old but great post from Sophia V. Prater on applying an Object-Oriented approach to User Experience, starting from her own work at CNN back in 2012.
🔄 Process
Engineering Managers are no different from Engineers in that they must have clear objectives, in order to optimise their impact.
Rodrigo Flores, an engineer from Nubank, lays out clearly what he expects from his EM, on the People, Delivery and Process sides. Worth a read to see how that aligns with your own view - even better to ask your team and see what they think!
⌨️ Tech
A short essay from Kent Beck on moving from a monolith to microservices, both in theory and in practice. The key point being: it takes time, but progress can be made by gradually increasing cohesion and removing coupling.
Until next time, have a great week
