The 5-Minute Startup CTO #86
Building habits, Organising teams, Minutes for transparency, Code ownership
Hi there,
I hope you’re well. Here’s your 4 tips for the week
👭 People
Find it hard to stick to a good routine? Online coach Katrina Ruth with 11 steps for building successful habits, mostly around self-awareness and self-control.
🥫 Product
A nice talk from the Head of Product at Ocado, on organizing teams in a world of complex products. Good insights, also valid when a startup moves from a single team to multiple development teams.
🔄 Process
A core piece of advice: always take minutes of meetings. Why? To record decisions, ensure actions are being followed up on, and for future reference. Jon Finerty writes well about another great reason: adding transparency to your culture, by making these minutes available to all. A great point.
⌨️ Tech
Britton Broderick discusses how best to assign code ownership: at the team, rather than individual, level. Couldn’t agree more!
Teams need to be responsible for the code they write, from ideation to end of life. This ensures the need for quality is baked in. You can’t throw the code over the wall to the ops/maintenance team, because spoiler alert, that’s you.
Until next time, have a great week
